Biography

Glass Marcano is a Venezuelan conductor whose career now runs through Berlin, Vienna, and Paris — trained inside El Sistema, sharpened on three continents, and still climbing.

Born in San Felipe, Venezuela, Marcano began studying violin at four years old at the Conservatorio de Música Blanca Estrella de Mescoli. She became a member of the Orquesta Sinfónica Juvenil de San Felipe through El Sistema — the National System of Youth and Children's Orchestras and Choirs founded by José Antonio Abreu — the program that gave her both an instrument and, eventually, a podium.

She studied conducting first under Teresa Hernández, then at the Universidad Experimental de las Artes with Alfredo Rugeles. She is now based in Berlin, completing her Master's in Orchestral Conducting at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler under Markus Stenz, alongside advanced studies at the Paris Conservatory under Pierre Michel Durand.

The turning point came in 2020: one of twelve finalists in the inaugural La Maestra Competition in Paris, and winner of its Orchestra Award. The recognition led directly to her appointment as Principal Guest Conductor of the Opéra de Tours (2021–2023), and, since 2024, Partner Conductor of the Wiener Concert-Verein through 2027, with regular engagements at the Vienna Musikverein.

Since then she has conducted across three continents — among them the Orquestra Gulbenkian, the Filarmónica de Bogotá, the Paris Mozart Orchestra, Orchestre Le Balcon, the Orchestre National de Lyon, the Orchestre de Chambre de Genève, Brussels Philharmonic, the Orchestra Filarmonica “Arturo Toscanini”, the Orchestre Métropolitain de Montréal, the Orquesta Filarmónica de Medellín, the Accademia Teatro alla Scala, and the Tiroler Symphonieorchester. Upcoming seasons carry debuts with the Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, the Orquesta Sinfónica do Porto, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Marseille, l'Orchestre National Avignon-Provence, and the Orchestra della Toscana, among others.

Marcano's training hasn't stopped at the podium she stands on. In the summer of 2022 she led a European tour with the Chineke! Junior Orchestra to the Lucerne Festival, the Berlin Konzerthaus, the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, and London's Clore Ballroom, and made her debut at the Al Bustan International Festival in Beirut conducting the Lebanese Philharmonic Orchestra — staying on afterward for an informal talk and masterclass with local students at Maison Dagher. In January 2024 she served as assistant conductor to Daniel Harding with the Youth Music Culture Guangdong orchestra in Guangzhou, and has also assisted Kazushi Ono at the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra and François-Xavier Roth at the Gürzenich Orchester Köln. Her masterclass mentors include Roth, Johannes Schläfli, Giancarlo Guerrero, Claire Gibault, Maxime Pascal, Nicolás Pasquet, and Sabrié Bekirova.

She also holds a law degree from the Universidad Central de Venezuela (2022) and is completing a Bachelor's degree in orchestral conducting at the Universidad Nacional Experimental de las Artes in Venezuela.

Ask what's next, and the answer is usually the same — another orchestra, another hall, another score to bring to life.
